What You Should Know About Diamonds (3) Clarity

Clarity

Most Diamonds have within them, tiny, natural characteristics, called Inclusions. These are formed during the crystallisation process as the diamond is being created, far beneath the Earth. They can be likened to fingerprints as they are unique to a particular diamond and, although they fall into specific types every set of inclusions is different from any other diamond. Returning briefly to the article on cut, you will recall that the "fire" in a diamond is produced by by light bouncing around within the stone. It is obvious from this that anything that interferes with this process will have an effect on the amount of fire, the more inclusions in a diamond, or any other gem for that matter, the less sparkle, and the fewer inclusions there are, the greater the fire. Also, it is true that the fewer inclusions there are, the rarer and hence more valuable a stone is. As with colour, Jewellers have adopted systems to describe the presence and quantity of inclusions and an example of a system is shown below.

On your Valuation Document, on stones of a reasonable size, say half a carat and greater, you should expect to find that the Valuer has used their expertise to assess the clarity of your stone and record it.

Remember, the above diagram is for example purposes only, each set of inclusions is unique, like a snowflake.
