What is a NAG Registered Valuer ?
In the past a Valuation on Jewellery usually consisted of one line, often hand written along the lines of:
Single Stone diamond set ring in 18ct gold £500
|
To be blunt that simply is not acceptable as a valuation. There is no indication of size of the stone (Carat Weight), colour or clarity of the stone, it doesn't even say in what style the diamond is cut. In the event of a future loss, how is any one supposed to revalue this item, is the gold white or yellow ? what style is the setting ? what do the shoulders look like ? |
(Explanations of above terms may be found on News Pages)
Registered Valuers are a group of highly trained, experienced Jewellers and Silversmiths, who have formulated a Scheme to produce High Quality, Detailed descriptions of Your Precious pieces. Should you be in the unfortunate position of suffering loss, another jeweller will have the precise details of your items in order that they can accurately arrive at a correct price for replacement. The selection and ongoing training is rigorous, and is controlled by The National Association of Goldsmiths (NAG).

Firstly, many Registered Valuers will provide a photo, this gives both the Jeweller and the Police a good idea of what your item looks like. The expression " A picture tells a thousand words" was made for Jewellery.
Then we add the description, the details below are a scan, taken from a Registered Valuers Valuation Document.
Now that the detail is there, this is not just any, single stone diamond ring, but a specific single stone diamond ring. Any experienced jeweller would be able to revalue this item, in the event of loss, just from this description.
All NAG Registered Valuers are dedicated to observing and recording detail, in order to arrive at a Valuation Figure. Registration is a Privilige and Not a Right. It is Renewable annually and The NAG have the right to suspend or remove Registered Valuer status from any Valuer, should the quality of their work fall below acceptable standards.
Ian Dunbar is not only an NAG Registered Valuer, but also has The NAG Gemstone Diploma and the very rare Professional Jewellery Valuer Diploma, The NAG Retail Jewellers Diploma and is a Fellow of The National Association of Goldsmiths.
