Speakers at NICON 2008


GlassForum is proud to present our speakers and lecturers at NICON 2008. Below you will find a brief presentation on each one.


 

Jørgen Schou-Christensen

Jørgen Schou-Christensen was born in 1937 in Copenhagen. He received an MA in art history from the Copenhagen University in 1965.

He was curator at the Museum of Art & Design in Copenhagen from 1967 until 2004.

As curator, art critic and exhibition organizer, he has been in permanent close contact with the studio glass movement since the 1960s. He has been involved in about 200 exhibitions, in many as curator, and has written several hundred articles and a number of books, many of which are related to the art of glass. Between 1977 and 2007, he has juried a number of important international competitions/exhibitions of modern glass, from Coburg to Kanasawa, and is currently involved in the preparation of a major exhibition of Modern European Glass art, which will open in September of this year in the Art Museum on Bornholm. He is also head of the Anneberg Collection in Denmark.

 

 

 

Richard Meitner

American-born independent artist Richard Meitner lives in Amsterdam, where he has had a studio since 1972. He was in co-charge of the glass department at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy for 19 years up until the year 2000. He is also currently Professor Convidado at the University in Lisbon, Portugal. His artistic works have been displayed around the world in practically every major museum exhibition of glass art, and in leading galleries, over the last quarter-century. 

 

 

Jean Luc Olivié

Jean Luc Olivié is currently curator of the glass department of the Musée des Arts Decoratifs in Paris, where he is responsible for the major French collection of glass containing examples ranging from the 16th to the 21st century. He studied art history at the Sorbonne, University of Paris, where he was also an associate professor for 9 years. In 2003, he was awarded Doctor of Arts by the Wolverhampton University School of Art and Design, He is author of a number of books, and has also realised numerous important exhibitions of the work of modern artists, such as Chihuly, Meitner and Eisch, to name but a few.

 

 

 

 

Wiktor Borowski

Glasstudio Borowski was founded in 1990 by Stanislav Borowski, who was born in France and subsequently moved to Poland and thence to Germany. In 1992, a new studio was founded in Tomaszow, Poland. The products of the studio encompass both unique art pieces and items for home decoration, the latter being marketed through a network of carefully chosen outlets. Examples of the studio production can be found in leading galleries and collections all over the world. In 1993 Wiktor Borowski became director of the studio, which has successfully managed to combine and internationally market art and “commercial” glass art.  

 

 

Peter McGrain

Peter McGrain has worked with glass for nearly 20 years, employing both cold and warm glass techniques. Early in his career, he studied under Richard Millard, the well-known American master glass painter. His works range from small privately commissioned panels, to huge architectural installations in public buildings, examples of which are the Greater Rochester International Airport, and the Strasenburgh  Planetarium, Rochester, New York. Peter McGrain has become an internationally recognised glass artist and has written innumerable articles for publication in the specialised press. Much of his success can be attributed to his unique, often engagingly humourous, imagery and talent for complex composition. He has won a number of prestigious awards and as a teacher is in great demand around the world.

 

 

 

 

Bob (Robert) Leatherbarrow

Robert Leatherbarrow was born in Montreal, Canada, in 1950. He is a trained exploration geologist now living in Calgary, Alberta., where he runs his own glass studio - Leatherbarrow Glass Studio. A well-known artist and much sought-after international instructor, he is renowned for his special design techniques, which seek to reflect natural textures and characteristics encountered during his geological activities in his glass objects. Robert Leatherbarrow’s work has been featured in numerous publications and  can be found in many galleries across the USA and Canada.

 

 

Jane Bruce

Jane Bruce is an English artist and educator living in New York. She has an MA degree from the Royal College of Art, London, and has studied at the New York State College of Ceramics. She has taught extensively around the world, and has also been lecturer, and then Head of Workshop at the Canberra School of Art, Australian National University, and subsequently Director at North Lands Creative Glass, Scotland.

During her prominent career, Jane Bruce has received numerous prestigious awards and fellowships from various institutions, and her works are included in countless major permanent collections in Europe, the USA and Australia       

 

 

Silvia Levenson

Silvia Levenson was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She studied at the Martin Garcia School of Graphic Design in Buenos Aires from 1973 – 1977, before emigration to Italy in 1981 where she now lives and works. Her art is internationally recognised and has been featured in numerous solo exhibitions and collections in Europe and North and South America. She is also a valued instructor, lecturing and teaching on both sides of the Atlantic.
