TRADITIONAL NORWEGIAN OIL SOAP

One of my favourite pampering rituals is to take a glorious footbath using Norwegian OIl Soap.
Once I am settled in my good chair, feet placed in a basin of hot water, fragrant with the smell of traditional oil soap, I am in heaven. Add a glass of wine and a good book and we're talking seventh heaven.

Norwegian oil soap is a traditional all-purpose soap, cherished for generations. Made of flax seed oil, water and lye, this natural soap is perhaps the most widely used household soap of Norway. It is the flaxseed oil that gives the oil soap its characteristic, inimitable fragrace. It is very concentrated. One small teaspoon does the trick. Dissolved in a basin of nice, warm water it cures everything from calloused skin to the winter blues. The soap is alcaline and properly diluted it holds a pH value of between 7 and 8.

Oil soap can be put to use in a multitude of ways:

SOFT, SMOOTH HANDS
Oil soap mixed with ground coffee (yes, coffee) removes nasty oil stains and eliminates smell (a super treatment after cleaning fish) leaving your hands sweet-smelling and smooth. Finish with a moisturising hand lotion.

FOOT BATH
To really pamper your feet, let them soak for a while in a tub of nice warm water with a teaspoon of oil soap dissolved in it. It softens even the hardest corns so you can remove them with a foot file. Don’t forget to treat your feet to a rich, nourishing foot cream or lotion as the finishing touch.

STAIN REMOVAL
For nasty oil stains on overalls or jeans, try rubbing some undiluted oil soap on the stains and leave for a while before laundering as usual.

CLEANING WOOD FURNITURE
There is no better way to care for natural wood. Again, a teaspoon in a bucket of warm water is enough. Leaves your home smelling like a Norwegian log cabin.
