President of the Jury
Naren Multani
Naren worked his first eight years in advertising at Ogilvy & Mather (Films) Mumbai. He picked up many accolades - for the agency and for himself. The most coveted were the One Show Pencil (Silver) in 2002 and a Clio Finalist in 2001, to name a few.
Naren moved to McCann-Erickson as Creative Director Films in May 2002 and has created more than 50 commercials for world brands. Films for UTI Bank and Sweetex fetched New York Festival Finalist nominations. A public service film for the International Osteoporosis Foundation was premiered across Asia and was well received. But perhaps the award that Naren is most nostalgic about is the 2000 IIFA Best Director Award. Despite a demanding advertising schedule, Naren showcases independent short films through the year. His first short film 'Mindgame' was shortlisted in several international festivals, including New York Short Film Festival, the San Francisco Film festival, Los Angeles Short film Festival, Spiritual Film Festival as well as the Lausanne Underground Film Festival. In 2006, the sequel to 'Mindgame' - 'Nine Minutes to Nirvana' picked up the Best Actor honour in the New York Short Film Festival. It also won the Best Film Prize at the Barcelona Film Festival 2006. The film was also listed at the Brussels International short film festival, FESTIVAL DU CINEMA DE PARIS, the Chicago Short film festival, the Spiritual Film Festival and the SAIFF (New York). Another short, 'Dead End' was in the official shortlist at the New York Short Film Festival in 2005. 'The Last Minute' - Naren's short film about a dying man's last thoughts was an official selection at the Short Film Festival of Los Angeles. Today Naren's trained his eye on the long format in story telling, working on ideas for world cinema. He usually prefers picking new talent in almost all fields, be it acting, writing, production or camera work. Call it his faith in beginner's luck or just a need to keep his work edgy and fresh.
He was a Jury at the D&AD (Design & Art Direction) Awards 2010, in the TV & Cinema Craft category.
His last film, Apollo Bunder Mumbai - 400001, has won the Best Film and Best Cinematography awards at Canada's WILDsound Film Festival.
