New York Short Film Festival
Comment by Jan-Eje Ferling, President of the International Jury, about the 2011 edition.
It was a great experience for me to watch and enjoy the nominated films of the New York Short Film Festival 2011. It was a stimulating and inspiring job, but also a challenge to choose the winners among all the impressive creations and their variety of ideas and emotional expressions. Film artists from very different countries and cultures shared their ambitions and inventive works with us by participating in this film festival linked to the Annual Program Without Frontiers, APWF.
The Committee of Art of the Program made the first selection. Then the competent and professional Jury members made the sensitive and challenging work to choose and nominate the winners within each category. Some films stood out remarkably for their exceptional skill of cinematography, acting or script, but we also had the delicate task to decide the best short film of the program among all these shining stars of ability and imagination.
The market for short films is still very limited. Most of the films will seldom be subject to commercial distributors or screened at cinemas for a broader public, an undeserved fate these short film enthusiasts are sharing with many gifted and individual film makers all over the world. Therefore the APWF gives the wonderful opportunity for film makers of any race, age, sex or confessional, political or cultural ideas to compete under the same conditions and to communicate their creations "without any boarders" to an expert Jury of film lovers with an open attitudes, wide tolerance and with no commercial aspects. Individuality and skillfulness always grow from courage, conviction and compassion. Originality and talent always have to struggle to get their deserved attention and acceptance.
The Jury is proud to have completed its purpose and wants to congratulate the finalists and the winners. I am grateful and happy for being a part of this exciting process.
I want to thank all the film makers and the gifted artists that so generously have contributed with your significant films to the New York Short Film Festival 2011. Please, go further and convince us and the film audience again with your talent and exciting stories.

"I enjoyed the opportunity to watch such a broad selection of films. Happily there were some very deserving films among those I viewed, which made final decisions a bit heart wrenching."
Chris Swider Member of the International Jury

"I have been part of the jury at a couple of festivals, though I have never had to write such reviews. The experience was great. Especially interesting was the way international jury functioned, including remote previews and the ability to review films independently, without extra interference. While I have done my best to remain duly objective, the selection was so good that I have had hard time picking the best ones for each category. I gave no consideration to aspects like sex, age, nationality, film material quality, nor how much or how little the film cost to make. I believe it is pretty difficult to have documentary and fiction projects competing in same categories, and since the festival continues to attract brilliant films from around the world, I do think it is time Best Documentary nomination was introduced. I would like to congratulate all the participants for being part of this excellent festival, as well as commend the festival organizers for their brilliant work and wish everyone lots of success!"
Giorgi Kharebava Member of the International Jury
