| | Phobia | Fear is normal. Being afraid is normal, it is even useful because it prevents us doing things which would harm us.
However, having a phobia is not the same thing at all. Anyone who suffers from a phobia knows how much distress it can cause and how it can prevent you living the life you want to lead. | | Phobia is a fear which is out of proportion to the real threat. When fear turns to phobia it becomes a bully. It will threaten you when you are weak, and each time you give way, it will try and push you a little further back, away from the thing you fear.
Phobias can be treated effectively with hypnosis. A typical treatment plan would include:
- Suggestions to make you stronger, so you can resist the bully
- A technique known as "Systematic Desensitization" where you build up your ability to confront your fear
- Opportunities to experience ("inside your head") resisting and winning.
All of these will increase your confidence to tackle your phobia in the real world.
Remember, your objective need not be to totally lose your fear. What you should aim for is to gain control over your fear, so that it does not limit how you live. |
