St Mary Redcliffe
Every year Bristol has an 'open doors' day, when entry to a wide range of very interesting historic sites is free. This year, for the first time, I visited St Johns on the Wall and saw the brass plaque of Thomas Rouley. I also joined a guided tour around St Mary Redcliffe. The final stop on this tour was to the muniment room or, as they now call it, 'Chatterton's room.' The room now has a tiled floor and has been well maintained. It contained only empty coffers, yet it still has a musty smell reminiscent of old books and manuscripts. The beautiful old rustic door to the room looks to be the original one, from Chatterton's time, as it matches the door shown in various sketches.
