IN CHARACTER (PORTRAIT OF AN ACTOR)
by Santiago Aguilar

Submitted for the
2010 BRUXELLES FICTION & DOCUMENTARY FESTIVAL

Director: Santiago Aguilar
Producer: Santiago Aguilar
Writer: Santiago Aguilar & Pepón Montero
Genre: Documentary
Country: Spain
Duration: 90 min.
Original Format: DV
Leading Actress: Carlos Lucas (Documentary)
Photography: José Luis Moreno
Editing: Cristina Otero Roth

Synopsis of the Film: Carlos Lucas walked the tightrope of memory. A good long pole was necessary to venture to cross, on his shoulders, the cable stretching either side of the abyss. Those of us who went forth were rewarded with an unexpected sight: the love for his job, his devotion for his family and a not entirely lost innocence in a world that lost it a long time ago.
Carlos Lucas could have been a cyclist, or a cosmonaut, or a banderillero... But he became a character actor.

Bio-filmography of the Director: In association with Luis Guridi, I am responsible for the direction and screenplay of six short 35-mm films between 1984 and 1989, and three feature films in which Carlos Lucas performed: Justino, un asesino de la tercera edad (La Cuadrilla, 1994), Matías, juez de línea (La Cuadrilla, 1996) and Atilano, presidente (La Cuadrilla, 1998).
Since La Cuadrilla entered a few years of temporary hibernation I've been surrounded by stale paperwork and films. I've written a couple of books on the internal history of the reviled Spanish cinema, scripts for the show Guridi is directing and I have contributed to digitalizing projects for Filmoteca Española, the Spanish Film Archive.
