High quality old wooden bows are in shortage. The bows are exposed to wear and tear, become softer and gets weaker because of their owners' and many violin builders lack of knowledge of how to treat them. E.g. violin cleaning polish containing oil will over time, when used for its purpose on a wooden stick, lowering the velocity of sound in the bow stick. The stick will never return to its original values. This is because its elasticity and resistance have been irrevocably modified. Even the quality factor is greatly reduced since the wood has lost its velocity and has become heavier.

The few high quality wooden bows that still exist and are in a good condition have, as a natural prediction of the basic economic assumptions of supply and demand, reached extremely high prices. The development in carbon fibre technology will in the future decrease the demand for wooden bows.
